The new government in Thailand led by Abhisit Vejjajiva has made a strong showing in a series of by-elections, increasing its parliamentary majority to 48. The by-elections were called to replace 29 MPs banned after a court ruling last month dissolved the former governing party,the Power People, the People Power Party for alleged vote fraud. 

A Spanish court has thrown out a case against the head of the Basque regional government who'd been accused of illegal contacts with Batasuna, the banned political wing of the Basque separatist group ETA. The court acted after the prosecution acknowledged that holding negotiations with Batasuna is not specifically outlawed.

The annual show business Golden Globe Awards often appointed to the Oscars had been announced in California. The award for the best film went to Slumdog Millionaire, the story of an orphan boy in Mumbai who wins a television quiz show. The British actress Kate Winslet won 2 awards for Best Actress in Revolutionary Road and Best Supporting Actress in the Reader.
